The Shetland geese are a small but hardy breed of domestic goose.

Our Shetland Goose won “Best of Breed” in the British Waterfowl Association, Champion Waterfowl 2020.

Their eyes are blue, for females the neck are mainly white often with varying amounts of gray plumage. The abdomen is relatively flat. The males are solid white. They have short pink bills and pink feet.

The Shetland goose is on the Rare breed survival trust watchlist.

They have been used to graze pasture, to rid the grass of parasites, such as the liver fluke for preparing it for grazing by sheep. Alternatively they provide a reliable source for meat.

This breed is much quieter than many and although they can hiss and flap, they rarely make contact (unless protecting their young). Once they get to know you they can become quite curious, even friendly, as well as being great at letting you know someone’s coming into the yard!

Shetland Geese will pair for life, and are inseparable with the gander making sure no one else gets to his goose. If one of them dies sometimes you can see the remaining one pining away for a while, but usually they will find another partner.

Size: Adult goose 5kg, Gander 6kg.

Eggs: 18 - 30 a year

Conservation Status: Critical
