French Marans are docile, lazy birds that can get fat easily if allowed so we recommend they are allowed to be as free range as possible. They are very placid in nature, quiet and good back garden birds.
Famously known for their deep brown eggs which have become increasingly popular. Historically Marans are a dual purpose bird known for their fine meat as well as dark eggs. Lord Greenway introduced them into England from France in 1929 after a visit to the Paris Exhibition due to him being attracted to their fleshing qualities (fine textured white flesh) and their fast growing attributes. Lord Greenway went on to show Marans in numbers achieving success at the Crystal Palace in 1934, then subsequently at the World Poultry Congress in Rome and London. The interest in the Marans was born!
Eggs: 200 dark brown eggs a year.
